Robotic surgery debuts at San Paolo Hospital in Naples. The first surgery with the Da Vinci Robot was performed in the Urology Unit, directed by Dario Del Biondo: a radical prostatectomy.
This is a significant step for the ASL Napoli 1 Centro facility, which is inaugurating a new surgical program based on advanced technology. The Via Terracina facility aims to progressively strengthen its healthcare offerings, with a focus on innovation and quality care.
The operation was performed by the team composed of Dario Del Biondo, Dante Di Domenico, and Biagio Barone, with Division Coordinator Loredana Prisco. Also in the operating room were anesthetists Marcello Pascale and Nicoletta Guarino, and the operating staff coordinated by Nunzio Grasso, along with Alessandro Bellofatto, Sabrina Pepe, Giorgio Di Costanzo, and Andrea Greco.
The launch was preceded by intense preparation, with the team busy in the days leading up to it finalizing the organizational, technical, and healthcare aspects necessary for the launch of this new activity. Collaboration between surgeons, anesthetists, and operating room staff allowed the first surgery with the Da Vinci Robot to be completed.
For ASL Napoli 1 Centro, General Manager Gaetano Gubitosa, the goal is to expand the facility's healthcare offerings: "The aim is to adapt the healthcare offerings to a hospital that will serve as a hub not only for a densely populated area of the city but also for the America's Cup event, given that the Village set up for the event and all the teams are located just a few kilometers from the hospital."
Medical director Maria Corvino thanked the professionals involved in the debut: «I would like to extend a special thanks to the entire team of the Urology Complex Operating Unit, to the anesthetists and to all the staff in the Operating Room who, with great commitment and a sense of responsibility, have carefully prepared this important debut».
For Corvino, the introduction of the new technology represents, above all, the beginning of a growth phase: "The Da Vinci Robot at San Paolo isn't a point of arrival, but the beginning of a new growth path for the hospital, for the benefit of our patients and the entire community."
This first operation marks the launch of robotic surgery in the urology department at San Paolo Hospital, part of the broader ASL Napoli 1 Centro program to enhance the technological and healthcare services of its facilities.
