Mobility in Naples, taxi drivers protest: "We need a traffic plan and the reactivation of limited traffic zones now."

Naples – A tough stance against the city administration and regional institutions, demanding immediate and structural interventions on the city's traffic system. This is contained in the official document released by the Comitato Tassisti di Base (CTB) and addressed to the Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, the President of the Campania Region, Roberto Fico, the Regional Councilor for Transport, Mario Casillo, the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and the City Councilors Edoardo Cosenza (Transport) and Antonio De Iesu (Legality).

At the heart of the category's demands is the management of urban mobility and the progressive congestion of city arteries, a factor that severely penalizes both the quality of life of residents and the provision of transport services.

Criticism of the council: "We need ordinances, not invitations."

The union's document emphasizes that the Mayor's frequent urgings to citizens to reduce their use of private vehicles in favor of public transportation are no longer sufficient. According to the Committee, a metropolis is not governed by appeals to civic duty, but by "concrete measures, ordinances, and a true mobility strategy, starting with limiting private traffic in the city center."

Taxi representatives recall that for years, they have been calling for the adoption of a comprehensive traffic plan and the full reactivation of the limited traffic zones already installed in the area. A key step concerns the Piazza Dante limited traffic zone in particular: the Committee emphasizes that the Second Municipality has already completed the administrative process under its jurisdiction.

Although this is a non-binding opinion, the final decision and political and executive responsibility now falls directly on Palazzo San Giacomo and the Department of Transport.

The impact on the sector and the economic demands

The paralysis of traffic, the document highlights, directly damages non-scheduled public transport.

The increase in travel times reduces the overall efficiency of the service and increases operating costs for operators, already strained by inflationary dynamics linked to high fuel prices.

Specifically, the requests put forward by the Basic Taxi Drivers Committee are structured around four main points: Emergency Traffic Plan: immediate implementation of traffic regulation measures; Reactivation of Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs): reinstatement of controls and active checkpoints, starting around Piazza Dante; Anti-inflation measures: support and interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of high fuel prices on the taxi industry; Safety and traffic flow: interventions to ensure a safer and more functional road network for both users and workers in the sector.

Prospects for mobilization

The document concludes with an appeal to all taxi workers, calling for maximum participation and unity in view of possible protest initiatives should their requests go unheard by the competent institutions.
