Terzigno: Student with knife at school: Prefect announces increased checks outside schools

Naples – The Terzigno case, where a knife was reported in a school, brings the issue of school safety in the Naples metropolitan area to the forefront. For Prefect Michele di Bari, the incident demonstrates the importance of ongoing collaboration between administrators, school staff, families, students, law enforcement, and local authorities.

"What happened in Terzigno demonstrates once again how crucial the synergy between the school and the institutions is," the prefect stated. "The school principal fully fulfilled his role, promptly reporting the presence of the knife and allowing law enforcement to intervene."

According to Di Bari, prevention depends on the ability to identify potentially dangerous situations early, before they escalate into violent episodes. "Networking and promptly intercepting critical situations" is, for the prefect, one of the essential tools for protecting students and school staff.

The Prefecture also confirms the strengthening of security in areas outside of metropolitan institutions. These services, entrusted to law enforcement, will be focused specifically on preventing the possession of weapons or objects capable of causing harm.

"As previously announced, checks will be carried out in front of schools, with particular attention to preventing the possession of weapons and objects capable of causing harm," added di Bari. Metal detectors may also be used as part of the planned activities, "according to the established procedures and in compliance with applicable jurisdictions and regulations."

The goal, the prefect emphasized, is to ensure students have a protected environment where they can study and grow. But enforcement alone isn't enough. "The safety of young people cannot be entrusted solely to repressive measures," di Bari emphasized. "Enforcement must be accompanied by ongoing education on legality, listening, and prevention."

The Prefecture of Naples will therefore continue to coordinate between police forces and schools, paying particular attention to situations considered most vulnerable and places where young people congregate.
