The whale carcass
A morning of alarm and amazement on the Torre del Greco coast, where the carcass of a large marine animal was washed ashore by the waves near the Lido Miramare. The remains, in an advanced state of decomposition, are believed to be those of a young fin whale or a large pelagic fish, although a definitive identification will only be possible after a post-mortem examination.
The report prompted the immediate mobilization of the Torre del Greco Port Authority and veterinary staff from the Naples 3 South Local Health Authority, who arrived on the scene to cordon off the area and prevent any risk to swimmers and residents. Green-Left MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli also visited the shoreline, urging rapid intervention for health and hygiene reasons and maintaining urban decorum, and monitoring the initial safety measures.
The coastline's conformation significantly complicates clearing operations: the beach is accessible only by a flight of stairs, making heavy vehicles impossible to access from land. Engineers are evaluating two main options: slinging and towing by sea to an equipped port dock, or mechanical lifting using a crane operating from the upper carriageway.
Along with disposal logistics, specialists will need to clarify the cause of the animal's death. According to a preliminary reconstruction, the carcass may have been the victim of a collision with a large merchant or cruise ship off the Gulf, before being washed ashore by the currents. Further sampling will allow them to determine the exact species and the impact mechanism.
