Fuel prices and traffic: Neapolitan taxi drivers in the streets on October 6th

Naples – Off-duty taxi drivers took to the streets to demand answers from the city administration regarding the issues they believe are increasingly putting pressure on their daily work. This is the thrust of the sit-in announced for Tuesday, October 6th, in front of Palazzo San Giacomo, the seat of the City of Naples, organized by the organizations ATN/Sitan, Unimpresa, Feder Taxi-Cisal, Fast Confsal, and Comitato Tassisti di Base.

At the heart of the protests are city traffic, the expectation of a plan to address traffic congestion, and the high cost of fuel, issues that directly impact the lives of drivers, who are forced to spend much of their day on city streets.

"Even those who govern remain blocked"

The events at recent institutional meetings also served as a trigger for the protest. In their statement announcing the protest, the taxi drivers specifically cited the incident involving the city councilor for mobility, Edoardo Cosenza, who was stuck in traffic and, according to the organizations, unable to attend a meeting.

The category considers this episode emblematic of a situation that no longer affects only those who work as drivers. "Councilor Cosenza was stuck in traffic and couldn't make the meeting," the taxi drivers recall.

The precedent of the City Council

In their reconstruction, the trade unions also recall what happened seven days ago in the City Council, when the session was dissolved due to a lack of a quorum.
According to the promoters of the sit-in, some councilors later justified their absence by referring to the difficulties related to traffic and a particularly congested Naples.

It is on this contradiction that taxi drivers are building part of their protest: if the paralysis of traffic ends up affecting even the activities of institutions, the consequences for those who spend many hours a day behind the wheel become even more severe.

Taxi drivers' request to the Municipality

"But if the traffic problem even prevents city officials from reaching government offices," the organizations emphasize, "how much does this situation weigh on taxi drivers who work the streets every day?"

The question directly concerns the working conditions of the category. For taxi drivers, traffic isn't just a disruption to travel; it can also lead to longer journeys, increased fuel consumption, and a reduction in service efficiency, with economic implications for operators.

The sit-in on October 6th will therefore also be an opportunity to bring the category's demands regarding urban mobility and operating costs back to the forefront of the debate with Palazzo San Giacomo, while the need, highlighted by taxi drivers, for interventions capable of reducing congestion on Naples' main arteries remains in the background.

The requests on the table

The protest therefore focuses on two closely related issues: traffic management and the economic sustainability of taxi operations. The organizations are demanding concrete answers from the administration and a discussion on mobility, arguing that the current situation is shifting a significant portion of the costs and inconvenience onto those who provide daily service on the city's roads.

On October 6th, taxi drivers will protest in front of the city hall, demanding that traffic be brought back to the center of the administrative agenda.
