Turkey changes coach: Montella sacked

The Turkish Football Federation has severed its relationship with Vincenzo Montella, thus closing a period that began in 2023. Here's what happened and what the decision says about the national team's future.

The Turkish Football Federation has officially announced the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella as coach of the Turkish national team. The decision comes after a Nations League window marked by four defeats: two against Italy and one against France and Belgium weighed on the federation's assessment.

Montella, a former striker known for his stints at AC Milan and Fiorentina, was appointed head coach on September 21, 2023, with a three-year contract, succeeding Stefan Kuntz. At the same time, he also took on the role of supervisor of the Under-21 national team, thus establishing a role that is not only prominent but also liaison between the various ranks of the national team.

Under the management of the Aeroplanino, Turkey faced high-profile moments: they reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship in Germany, losing 2-1 to the Netherlands. Subsequently, the national team participated in the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, although they finished last in the group stage with just three points. These sporting events weighed on Montella's performance and led the federation to terminate his employment relationship.

The name of the new coach has not yet been announced: the TFF is still in the process of finalizing the appointment, hoping to quickly identify a leader capable of guiding the team in upcoming international matches. This decision represents an important step in the process of reflecting on the present and future of the Turkish national team, balancing expectations of redemption with the need for consistency that will allow them to regain a stable season after a run of inconsistent results.
