In Campania over two thousand infected for a few days. It is the sign of the relaxation that has occurred in recent weeks.
And today we are forced to take drastic measures. From Monday all schools will close. Six cases of the English variant have already been recorded among students. We are closing because we must continue and complete the vaccination of school staff. With all due respect to some committees that appeal to the administrative courts”. This was announced by the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca during his usual Friday Facebook live. And he also explained that once this operation is completed, there will be talk of reopening schools. “For school staff we have reservations for February 25 for 114 thousand units, to date 28 thousand people have been vaccinated – he said – of AstraZeneca we have 142 thousand doses in February and 164 thousand in March, therefore we have the possibility of completing the vaccination of school staff by March”.
“I don’t think we need to wait for a widespread epidemic of Covid among 10, 15, 18-year-olds, with all due respect to some committee that is always ready to appeal to the administrative courts,” he adds. The president of the Campania regional government emphasizes that, in schools, there is a particularity regarding the variants, the fact that “they are more aggressive in general on the population, but in particular on the younger population. This is the element that should worry us.” The stop to in-person lessons, he clarifies, is linked to two elements: “We need to deal with the new variants and we need to use a few weeks to complete the vaccination of school staff.” “Two clear reasons,” he argues, “that have nothing ideological about them and that are indifferent to the logic of continuous complaining.” De Luca then thanks the school employees "for the extraordinary work done in recent months, for the ability to manage in-person and distance learning, for the patience and professionalism demonstrated even when he had to manage in-person learning at 50%".

“We must be patient with the government, on which there are exaggerated expectations. It is useless and illusory to expect miracles, we will not have them”. President De Luca explained. “As for the relationship between the government and the territories, we will probably have more difficulties – he points out – the strong presence of technicians means a lack of sensitivity for the problems of the territories and, in some cases, for social problems. Let's take this into account to avoid disillusionment in a few weeks”.
“The equitable distribution of vaccines has not occurred, we have had inequalities to the detriment of Campania in particular. We as a Region have presented a correct needs plan compared to the first phase, other Regions have not, also because the proposed criteria were open to discretion. Anything can enter into the definition of healthcare personnel. Result: the Campania Region has received 64 thousand fewer doses than Lazio, which has the same population as Campania, which means 32 thousand fewer people to vaccinate, 26 thousand fewer doses than Emilia Romagna, which has 1,3 million fewer inhabitants than Campania, 7 thousand fewer doses than Veneto, which has 900 thousand fewer inhabitants than Campania, and I could go on”.
De Luca stressed that "as the Campania Region we have accepted a single inequality, that of the elderly population because we have other regions with a larger elderly population than Campania, but obviously with the commitment that the less doses will then be recovered starting from the end of March. We will see if this Government will restore from the end of March the only decent criterion in a serious country: a vaccine for every Italian citizen, from Piedmont to Sicily".
