Opera Mayor Arrested: He Stole 2.880 Masks When They Were Unavailable
Antonino Nucera, the mayor of Opera (Milan) arrested and placed under house arrest today by the Carabinieri of Milan, in execution of a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of Milan, regarding the alleged improper management of surgical masks, is investigated "for the hypothesis of the crime referred to in art. 81 cpv and 314, c.1, cp because, with multiple executive actions of the same criminal plan, in his capacity as Mayor of the Municipality of Opera, he appropriated an estimated number of 2.880 personal protective equipment".
“In this case,” we read further in the order of over 200 pages signed by investigating judge Fabrizio Filice, “these are masks, destined, in the quantities indicated below, for the RSA Anni Azzurri Mirasole in Opera – Frazione Noverasco (supplies by the Metropolitan City of Milan and the Civil Protection) and for the municipal pharmacy in Opera, in particular: 2.380 devices directed to the RSA; 500 devices forming part of the supply to the municipal pharmacy.”
“The wiretaps have also brought to light other criminally relevant conduct carried out directly by the mayor, such as embezzlement of a large number of PPE (masks) precisely during the first phase of the health emergency in the months of March and April 2020, when there was notoriously a very limited availability that they were trying to ensure for individuals at risk”. This is written, in a passage from the house arrest order, by the investigating judge of the 'Feudum' operation of the Milan Carabinieri, which led to the arrest today of the mayor of Opera, Antonino Nucera.
