Heroic Driver Saves 24 Children From Burning Bus: Praise for Mauro Mascetti.
He saved 24 children on their way to a summer camp from the flames that engulfed a Red Cross bus this morning, and now the Lombardy Region is nominating him for a commendation.
It was his quick reflex that avoided dramatic consequences. The bus he was driving with 24 children on board caught fire in a tunnel on State Road 36 near Lecco on Lake Como. The fire began near Varenna, in the Fiumelatte Nord tunnel.

Mauro Mascetti, noticing a tire explosion, noticed that the vehicle had caught fire and the fire was rapidly spreading. He immediately stopped the bus and quickly made the 24 boys on board get off, making them go to the safety corridor of the tunnel and saving their lives.
Moments later the bus was completely engulfed in flames. Five firefighting teams had to intervene. firefighters to put out the fire.
The bus had left from the oratory of Lipomo, near As an, and was headed to Livigno for a children's camp.
The children were unharmed, only seven were taken to the emergency room in Lecco for tests due to smoke inhalation, but they are all fine and have returned home.

"Once I understood what had happened - Mascetti later said - I did not hesitate to secure the passengers by making them get off the vehicle and arranging for them to be taken to safety by the oratory coordinator. Once the boys were safe, I attempted every action to put out the fire, but without success. The priority, however, was to save the boys' lives".
According to the Red Cross, the bus had been inspected at the beginning of June by the Como Motor Vehicle Department.
Mauro Mascetti, the hero driver, is part of the Red Cross "he was able to manage the incident promptly and skillfully, acting first and foremost as a rescuer" said the Commissioner of the Como Red Cross Committee, Paolo Russo.

“A heartfelt thanks to Mr. Mauro Mascetti, the Red Cross driver who today, with an act of pure heroism, saved 25 young boys, while flames raged inside the bus he was driving”. Giuseppe Moles, Undersecretary for Publishing and Vice President of the Forza Italia Senators, wrote in a note, underlining: “Mr. Mascetti is the best part of Italy, the one that acts instinctively and without fear, to the point of risking his own life to save that of others. His was an act of great courage and responsibility, noble and moving, for which I hope he will soon receive public praise”.
