Nearly 99 out of 100 Covid deaths since last February had not completed the vaccination cycle, and among those who had completed it, there was a higher average age and a higher average number of previous pathologies than average. This is stated in an in-depth analysis contained in the periodic report on deaths by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
Up to July 21, there were 423 SARS-COV-2 positive deaths in vaccinated people with a “complete vaccination cycle” and they represent 1,2% of all SARS-COV-2 positive deaths that occurred since February 1 (35.776 deaths in total), chosen as the index date because it corresponds to the five weeks necessary to complete the vaccination cycle from the beginning of the campaign. The analysis is based on a sample of 70 medical records of the 423 SARS-COV-2 positive deaths that occurred up to 21/07/2021 in vaccinated people with a “complete vaccination cycle” (16.5%). Compared to the total deaths for which the medical records were analyzed, in the sample of deceased people with a “complete vaccination cycle” the average age is decidedly high (88.6 vs. 80 years).
Furthermore, the average number of pathologies observed in this group of deaths is 5 (median 5, Standard Deviation 2,2), much higher than the deaths of the general population (3,7).
After acute respiratory failure, superinfections are the most common complications in people who died with a complete vaccination cycle. Antibiotic and steroid therapy are the most used therapies on these patients. “The results presented here – concludes the report – can have two possible explanations. First, very elderly patients with numerous pathologies may have a reduced immune response and therefore be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and its complications even if they have been vaccinated.
Secondly, this result may be explained by the fact that priority for vaccination was given to the oldest and most vulnerable people and that therefore this represents the population with the highest prevalence of full-course vaccination at the date this evaluation was performed”.
