Three activists, guests of the first day of the summer school organized by the Dire agency and Diregiovani.it they answered questions from 130 students from all over Italy: how does one become an activist?
How do you bring an issue to the agenda without it becoming a
'fashion' approached superficially? How can you talk to everyone without excluding those with a different political orientation? The response of the three guests – Tullia Nargiso of Middle School Students Network, Pietro Turano, actor and LGBTQ activist+ and Giovanni Mori of Fridays For Future – has the same point in common, which sounds like a message to the Z generation: break the media bubble. "The square and social media are both useful places - Tullia Nargiso pointed out - to reach more people, of different ages and with different interests. It is important that we understand that to become activists we begin by each using our own voice with the conviction that counts. How does one become an activist?
Going deeper, being present, being aware that your voice counts even just when you are discussing a topic at dinner with friends”. For Pietro Turano, however, the bubble must be broken for two reasons in particular: recognizing one’s privileges, which are not a fault but which must be seen and recognized and possibly exploited in order to be useful to others. And for the intersectional struggle, because today more than ever “it is impossible to think that struggles should not meet at a certain point even if they are different or we carry them forward in a different way: if I contaminate myself with the network of high school students I have the possibility of reaching more people and they can offer more tools in addition to those they already offer to their community”.
And then the experience of Giovanni Mori, who told how raising awareness of the environmental issue intersects very different languages and tools, from memes, to information pills up to mail bombing to parliamentarians; but also and above all by stopping “use the image of the skinny polar bear”, which refers to places far from us, consequently also moving away the horizon of the problem, using instead “very concrete but innovative and unusual arguments, which touch the heart of people’s daily lives, such as the fact that beer is at risk of extinction because climate change threatens barley crops.”
After the live broadcast Youtube in the morning with the young activists, in the afternoon the students all met online for the greetings of the director of the Say, Nicola Perrone and for the group workshops on journalistic storytelling. The appointment is for tomorrow morning with Claudio Lenzi and Giulio di Feo – respectively social media editor and journalist at the Gazzetta dello Sport – and the direct testimony of Raffaele Cacciapuoti, aka Er_Caccia98, ProPlayer Fifa for AC Monza, always on the channels Facebook and Youtube of diregiovani.it.
