Birth with a very rare anomaly at the hospital in Salerno. The newborn had an umbilical cord with 4 blood vessels
A Ghanaian woman gave birth last January at the Risky Pregnancy Unit of the AOU San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona in Salerno, directed by Dr. Mario Polichetti, to a newborn baby with an umbilical cord with four blood vessels.
A very rare anomaly, which occurs with a percentage between 0,2 and 0,3 percent, and usually associated with multiple congenital malformations, including congenital heart disease, genitourinary malformations, malformation of the central nervous system, cleft lip and fetal hydrops. In the case of the woman in question, who presented a reassuring clinical picture, with a placenta compatible with the third trimester of pregnancy, the aforementioned diagnosis, however, did not generate complications and problems for the newborn, who was fortunately born healthy.
“The pregnant woman's pregnancy was followed and monitored by ultrasound from the very beginning., says Doctor Mario Polichetti, the woman was assisted with care and dedication by doctors Maria Antonietta Castaldi and Virginia Gargano, and by doctor Carlo De Rosa, at the Risky Pregnancy Clinics, and routine checks did not reveal any anomaly or malformation caused by this rare anomaly. Often, continues Polichetti, a normal cord has two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein, but in the case of the Ghanaian baby, there were four blood vessels”.
At the time of delivery, performed by Doctor Mario Polichetti and Doctor Carlo De Rosa, the absence of any malformations, not highlighted by previous ultrasounds, was confirmed when the newborn was born, in good health.
