The list of ten songs is an interesting mix of musical genres, generations and themes. Amnesty International Italy e Voices for Freedom have chosen as candidates for the Amnesty International Italia Award in the Big section. The historic award, now in its 20th edition, goes to songs on human rights published by established names in Italian music in the previous year.
The following are competing in this edition (in alphabetical order by artist): 99Posse with “Nero su bianco” (Persico / Iovine / Messina); Caparezza feat. Mishel Domenssain with “El sendero” (Domenzain Suarez / Salvemini); Federica Carta & Mydrama with “Tocca a me” (Al Kassem / Scire Scapuzzo / Carta / Martinelli); Carmen Consoli with “L'uomo nero” (Consoli); Cristina Donà with “Distratti” (Donà / Lanza / Donà); Gang with “Dago” (Severini); Mahmood with “Icaro è libero” (Mahmoud / Rapetti Mogol / Catitti / Mahmoud); Mannarino with “Congo” (Mannarino); Ermal Meta with “Nina e Sara” (Meta / Milani / Clivati / Meta); Erica Mou with “Cinema” (Mou).
Among the topics covered: real or metaphorical imprisonment, emigration, immigration, exploitation, slavery, racism, abuse of power, dictatorship, the vital spirit of human beings, nature, homotransphobia, freedom.
The prize is awarded by a jury, which will be announced soon, composed of journalists, radio and television hosts, intellectuals, industry professionals, representatives of Amnesty International Italy and Voci per la Libertà.
The winner will be awarded during the next edition, the 25th, of “Voices for Freedom – A Song for Amnesty”, scheduled from 21 to 24 July in Rosolina Mare (Rovigo).
The artistic director of the festival, Michele Lionello, underlines that: “In this moment of great violations of human rights, the work of our festival is even more significant, that of raising public awareness through the power of music. By supporting the most famous names in Italian music and emerging ones, we try to be a megaphone for all the voices that have a message of respect and tolerance to spread, capable of raising awareness on the issue of human rights, an issue that concerns each of us, no one excluded.".
In the meantime, registrations are open for the Amnesty International Award in the Emerging section, with a deadline of April 18, 2022. Among the artists who registered by February 28, the Amnesty Youth Award will be up for grabs, which will allow one of them to be among the semifinalists of the final phase of the competition, scheduled as part of “Voices for Freedom – A Song for Amnesty”. The winner will be chosen from the votes cast by the young people (under 35) of Amnesty International.
