The incident occurred this morning on board the carriages of the Naples-Sorrento line of the Circumvesuviana, and it was passengers themselves who reported the incident.
The NAS Carabinieri had actually boarded the Circumvesuviana to carry out routine checks on the use of masks. Routine checks, carried out on all public transport. But the sight of the Police was enough to trigger a general stampede.
Fanpage.it itself verified the story by contacting the NAS Carabinieri: they had boarded to check the use of personal protective equipment on board the train. Along with them, inspectors from the Ente Autonomo Volturno also boarded the train to validate or verify travel tickets. And this is precisely what triggered the stampede, and in a few minutes the train was empty. Many preferred to get off the train probably to avoid fines.
