From Caserta to Trieste, the journey of the Persian horse for mental health.
The enterprise of the horse Esso and his cowboy to promote the protection of mental health and the prevention of psychiatric disorders in Italy starts from the Real Sito di Carditello, Sunday 2 October.
From the Real Sito di Carditello to Trieste to promote the protection of mental health and find innovative solutions for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of psychiatric disorders.
The journey of the horse of the Government Race of Persano will start from the Bourbon Palace on Sunday 2 October and – through services for mental distress and communities throughout Italy – will reach the statue of Marco Cavallo in Trieste, symbol of that law 180 of 13 May 1978 (Basaglia Law) which abolished mental asylums in Italy.
A real feat for the horse Esso and his cowboy Sam Adul, who came especially from Australia: 2 months of solo travel; 1180 km from San Tammaro (Caserta) to Marco Cavallo in Trieste; 50 stops in Italy, guests every evening from various therapeutic rehabilitation and socio-educational communities, calling people who suffer from these fragilities to directly testify.
“Persano’s Journey for Mental Health – declares Santo Rullo, psychiatrist and scientific director of ECOS – is a traveling provocation that will shine a spotlight on conditions of mental distress in different territories, with the aim of encouraging the public, private and third sectors to implement integrated approaches that enhance complementary psychosocial, empowerment and participation interventions”.
The aim of the project – strongly desired by the godmother of the initiative, Princess Philippa Torlonia, and created by the non-profit association Ecos in collaboration with the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello and Rai per la Sostenibilità, with the fundamental contribution of the Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale – is to rediscover the relevance of Basaglia's thought and implement it in all territories, fully structuring that complex of social support activities, complementary to pharmacological and psychiatric treatment.
“I think it is absolutely important to support – comments Emmanuele FM Emanuele, president of the Terzo – Pilastro Internazionale Foundation – uan initiative as new as it is effective, thanks to which a knight will meet the inhabitants of small towns and larger cities, along a route of about 1.200 kilometers, bringing his testimony on the vital importance of mental health for human beings and telling how many people suffer because of this type of fragility. Sharing experiences and the closeness of one's community can be a precious and valid support for traditional therapies, especially in this difficult historical moment that has put the psychological balance of a large part of our society to the test, starting with adolescents and the most vulnerable categories".
At each stage of the journey, active citizens and local organizations involved in this field will be called upon to testify to the importance of mental health and to tell the stories of success that support people who suffer from these fragilities every day.
“The Real Sito di Carditello – says Luigi Nicolais, president of the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello – has always been a model of inclusion and a meeting place. The Ecos project represents not only the confirmation of our mission, which focuses precisely on the social role of cultural sites and community participation, but above all a symbol of rebirth for the entire territory. The Foundation intends to retrace the history of the monumental complex through the valorization of the Razza Governativa di Persano. A further step towards our great relaunch project, through hippotherapy courses, activities dedicated to the psychophysical well-being of visitors and awareness campaigns aimed at new generations”.
A prominent feature of the Royal Site of Carditello is the presence of horses of the Government Breed of Persano, the prized breed of state horses born in 1744 by will of King Charles of Bourbon, the result of a successful cross between Turkish stallions and mares from the Kingdom of Naples.
