The parents of a twenty-one year old girl who was kept locked up in her house for years in Aiello del Sabato, in the province of Avellino.
The ruling by the preliminary hearing judge of the Avellino court, Francesca Spella, inflicted the heaviest sentence on the young woman's 47-year-old mother, while the father, deemed partially incapable of understanding and willing, was given two years less.
They were accused of mistreatment in the family, kidnapping and aggravated personal injury. The trial was held with the abbreviated rite at the request of the defendants' lawyer. The public prosecutor had requested a sentence of sixteen years for the mother and 14 years for the father.
The incident dates back to April 23 of last year when the Carabinieri, at the request of the victim's sister, intervened inside the house. Subsequent investigations confirmed that the 21-year-old was kept tied up in the house with a chain and, in addition to suffering mistreatment and harassment of all kinds, she had been prevented from leaving the house for years.
