The influx of holidaymakers risks leaving the citizens of Capri and Anacapri and the mayor of the blue island, Marino Lembo, today intervenes to demand compliance with the protocol signed in the Region on the quota of seats to be reserved for residents on hydrofoil and ferry trips.
The controversy, raised by the island delegation of the National Consumers Union chaired by Theodoric Boniello, has been the talk of the town for a few days. Mayor Lembo has written to the shipping companies and to the Campania region urging the “right to continuity for residents on the island of Capri”.
The correspondence mainly focused on the difficulties reported by the island's citizens in finding a seat on the means of transport departing from Naples in certain time slots crowded with tourists and vacationers. Also highlighted were critical issues regarding online ticketing and the minimum age of paying passengers.
Lembo therefore urges “respect for the right of residents with a reserved quota of at least forty seats to purchase travel tickets within fifteen minutes of departure, as per the agreement with the Campania Region of 2 May 2019”.
The letter also emphasizes that “to date it is not possible to book tickets online with the resident rate” and among the requests is that of allowing residents to review the pricing of travel tickets for children and to extend the minimum age to four years old.
The mayor of Capri also announced to the shipping companies that “will put on the agenda the convening of a round table discussion between the parties on the issue with the Campania Region”.
For the National Consumers Union, the intervention of the mayor of Capri is "an important and clear signal and hopefully not an isolated one. In the event that shipping companies continue to adopt such conduct in contempt of the fundamental rights of citizens - says Teodorico Boniello - it is necessary that the Municipalities proceed judicially".
