On Monday 9 October, Casa del Contemporaneo kicks off its 2023-24 season, turning on the lights simultaneously in its four venues: at 21.15:150 pm, Sala Assoli, Teatro Ghirelli and Teatro Karol will join the chorus of 19.00 Italian theatres, which, for one evening, will return to tell the story of the Vajont disaster (with a preview scheduled for XNUMX:XNUMX pm at the Teatro dei Piccoli, which will host a delicate project to create environmental awareness even among the youngest).
A political act, which responds to the appeal launched by Marco Paolini, thirty years after his historic show and sixty years after the landslide that cost the lives of 2000 people. In Campania, the Nest of San Giovanni a Teduccio, the Teatro Comunale Vittorio Emanuele of Benevento and Eidos Teatro of San Giorgio Del Sannio also adhere to the project.
The VajontS 23 project, curated by Marco Paolini for La Fabbrica del Mondo, will unite the entire theater community: great actors and students from theater schools, permanent theaters and research companies, workers and spectators, who will meet in the most diverse places - from the Piccolo in Milan to off-circuit theaters – bringing their own Vajont on stage. A single breath that will stop at 22.39pm - the time in which the mountain collapsed into the dam -, to gather in a silence that nails us to the present: from the recent events of the flood in Emilia Romagna to the Casamicciola landslide, VajontS will be an opportunity to reflect and activate what Paolini defines as "Civil Prevention" tools.
“It is that thin thread that unites the present to the past that guides our choice to join this important national project – explains the artistic director of Casa del Contemporaneo Hygina of Napoli. Il vajont by Paolini was performed on our stage for the first time, almost 30 years ago. Today, as then, it seems necessary for the theatre to be the black box of the world, the one that records its impacts and shows them, to understand the mechanisms of accidents, preventing them from happening again. And if we are not able to predict foreseeable catastrophes – like the one that recently happened in Libya – then we must train ourselves to do so: this project, in particular, gives us the opportunity to make up, through new stories of the disaster, for that lack of imagination that leads us to underestimate the risk".
From the Spanish Quarters of Naples to Salerno, from Fuorigrotta to Castellammare: the four rooms of Casa del Contemporaneo will join the chorus of VajontS of Italy and Europe, with an intergenerational project. Rosario Sparno will direct three stage readings, bringing together actors and science communicators, to demonstrate that emotions and scientific knowledge, if combined, can create awareness and education about risk. A careful and systemic reading of the territory is the first step towards a targeted and effective mitigation of risks to try to prevent future disasters. On stage, at Sala Assoli, the actor Luca Iervolino and the science communicator Massimo Ruccio; at Ghirelli, the actress Paola Senatore and the science communicator Luca Pacca; at Karol, the communicator Mariangela D'Aquino will be on stage together with Francesca Fedeli – winner of the 2023 Hystrio Vocation Award. While at the Teatro dei Piccoli Salvatore Guadagnuolo, Peppe Coppola and Cristina Morra will involve about 80 students from the fourth classes of the IC Madonna Assunta of Naples, in a playful experiment that will lead them to explore the theme of water. The project is produced by Casa del Contemporaneo, Associazione Assoli and Le Nuvole.
“On October 9th we will talk about a mass murder – says director Rosario Sparno. A State murder. The Vajont story is not a story that belongs to the past. It is our present. Every time there is a conscious and culpable underestimation of a risk to the detriment of the common good and human lives, we have a Vajont. A murder, which is the result of our haughty and arrogant approach to nature”.
