Ariano Irpino. Reading the telephone messages could bring a turning point in the investigation into the death of Gerardina Corsano.
Article Key Points
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Benevento has in fact entrusted an expert with the task of extracting a forensic copy of the content of the conversations and messages present in the last few weeks on the cell phone of Angelo Meninno, Gerardina Corsano's husband, and of some of his relatives.
The decision, communicated with the recommendation “Do it quickly”, is an unexpected but necessary turning point in the investigation that aims to shed light on the death of the forty-six-year-old Ariano Irpino, which occurred on October 31st.
Initially, it was assumed that the woman had died of food poisoning caused by the botulinum. On the evening of October 28, in fact, Gerardina Corsano and her husband had used oil with chili pepper to season the pizzas ordered in a well-known restaurant in Ariano Irpino.
Food tests have ruled out botulism
However, the findings of the expert assessments on the food seized in the pizzeria carried out by the Istituto Superiore della Sanità have excluded this hypothesis.
Even the reports relating to Angelo Meninno's hospital stay at the Cotugno Napoli, after being admitted to the Ariano hospital, and from the first autopsy report on Gerardina's body, contributed to excluding the possibility of food poisoning.
The new investigation, therefore, focuses on the poisoning hypothesis.
The investigators - as Il Mattino anticipates - hope to obtain useful elements to understand what really happened, analyzing the conversations and messages of Angelo Meninno with other people. One hypothesis is that the woman was poisoned by contact with chemical substances used in her husband's company for the preservation of cereals or other agricultural products.
Another hypothesis is that the woman was the victim of an unforeseeable health condition. Lawyer Gerardo Giorgione, who represents the Corsano family, is convinced that the telephone conversations of the seized cell phones will help shed light on the affair.
Botulinum is excluded, but investigations continue
The tests carried out on the food seized after the death of Gerardina Corsano, the 46-year-old from Ariano Irpino who died on October 31, gave negative results. The hypothesis of botulinum food poisoning, initially feared, has now been definitively set aside.
The investigators, led by the public prosecutor Maria Amalia Capitanio, are now working to establish with absolute certainty what caused the woman's death and the state of malaise in her husband, Angelo Meninno, so much so that he had to be transferred from the hospital in Ariano Irpino to the Cotugno in Naples.
Among the hypotheses being examined, there is that of poisoning or "food poisoning" caused by the handling of chemical substances used for the preservation of agricultural products that the couple marketed.
The final confirmation will come from the autopsy, whose final report will be filed by the consultants appointed by the Benevento prosecutor's office in 90 days. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor has ordered the seizure of the cell phone of Angelo Meninno and some of his family members.
The owners of the Oasi pizzeria in Ariano Irpino, Pina Scaperrotta and Luigi Tranuccio, remain under investigation on charges of manslaughter.
Also under investigation is the doctor at the Sant'Ottone Frangipane hospital in Ariano Irpino, Gaetano Lisella. The woman's family is asking for full light to be shed on the matter. The lawyer for the owners of the pizzeria reiterates that the causes of death must be sought elsewhere.
