The 23rd edition of the “International Festival of 700th Century Neapolitan Music”, organised by theDomenico Scarlatti Association.
Tomorrow, Saturday 16 December, at 20.30 pm, in the Baroque Church of Donnaregina Diocesan Museum (Largo Donna Regina), it will be the turn of “La corte di Pulcinella” by Carlo Faiello which was born from the intention of finally giving the Neapolitan mask institutional recognition, given that it has constituted, for almost four centuries, the universal symbol of Neapolitanity.
Those who work in the field of art know very well that to overcome the contradiction between individual profit and collective interest, between power and ethics, between technology and fantasy; it is essential to invest in Culture.
One of the problems is to free Pulcinella from the clichés that have been stuck on him since he entered the Neapolitan theatre: here Pulcinella is a very different character from the one proposed to us by rhetorical iconography and the mass media.
Even today in Italy we live off the rhetoric of Pulcinella, which is not art, but ethnic expression; ignoring that our popular comic hero represents a myth of collective identification, both local and planetary.
Consequently, in this historical moment of confusion, produced by the collapse of certainties and illusions, its theatricality can emblematically represent the contemporary human condition. Therefore, rewriting its history and evaluating its depth can be very interesting and 'provocative'.
In recent years there has been a violent process of homologation, a progressive loss of orientation, a persuasive abuse of words and images to the detriment of the universe of knowledge.
An opportunity to resist old and new ailments, caused by mass culture, is therefore offered to us by the recovery of Pulcinella, the quintessential city metaphor and the most striking emblem of the Neapolitan city.
A spectacular event in which the cultural heritage of the Neapolitan mask is “recovered” in a positive way: as the conscience and necessary imagination of a people that opposes any attempt at eradication. With Lello Giulivo, Patrizia Spinosi, Mario Brancaccio, Maria Teresa Iannone, Antonio Faiello, Paola Maria Cacace, Federica Avallone, Peppe di Colandrea. Texts and Music Carlo Faiello.
