Two new dates with the world music of Sacro Sud at the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia (Largo Donnaregina, Naples).
The fourth edition of the festival directed by Enzo Avitabile, organized by Black Tarantella and financed by the Municipality of Naples, as part of the Napoli Città della Musica project, continues this week with two concerts.
Tuesday 19 December Kayhan Kalhor returns to Naples. The Grammy Award and Womex Artist Award-winning Iranian musician, considered the world’s greatest virtuoso of the kamancheh (Persian violin), will perform at the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia with Turkish musician Erdal Erzincan (baglama), retracing the footsteps of the albums “The Wind” (2006) and “Kula Kulluk Yakışır Mı” (2013) published by ECM.
Originally from Tehran, Kayhan Kalhor has played a major role in popularizing Persian tradition around the world through his many musical collaborations and is a creative force in today's music scene. His performances and multiple collaborations have attracted audiences and critics worldwide. He has studied the music of many regions of Iran, especially Khorason and Kordestan, touring the world as a soloist with various ensembles and orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre National de Lyon. He was also a co-founder of the renowned ensembles Dastan and Masters of Persian Music. In Naples, for the Sacro Sud festival he will share the stage with Turkish musician Erdal Erzincan, composer and singer of Alevi folk music.
Thursday December 21, instead, the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia will feature the German trumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen together with the Iranian musician Alireza Mortazavi, one of the most interesting and renowned composers in the Middle East. Together they present the project “Hamdelaneh – Intimate Dialogues”, a journey between avant-garde and minimalism, jazz and contemporary music. Markus Stockhausen (son of the famous Karlheinz) and Alireza Mortazavi, a musician specialized in the study of the ancient santoor (Iranian instrument belonging to the zither family), give life to a project that blends ancient and modern. Apparently distant worlds that meet in a new and extremely original form.
The fourth edition of Sacro Sud will conclude on Saturday 6 January in Ponticelli (Church of San Francesco and Santa Chiara) with “Napoli & l'Africa”, another unreleased project by Enzo Avitabile with the extraordinary participation of the Malian griot and multi-instrumentalist Baba Sissoko.
