The news, released by the information site Internapoli, immediately sparked debates and controversies: the hospital company announced the start of an internal investigation, the Cgil defined the incident as "disturbing", while the Avs parliamentarian, Francesco Borrelli, he explained with disappointment how "we continue to claim that our country is anti-fascist, and yet the facts tell, at least in part, a different reality".
The images that went viral on the web show the bust next to a 2021 calendar with a photo of Mussolini and the motto 'Memento audere semper'.

The head of the department, the surgeon Carmine Antropoli, former mayor of Capua for the center-right and former local leader of Forza Italia, was involved in the controversy. He explained that it was an act of superficiality and, despite being on vacation, he reprimanded the colleague responsible for the incident.
Antropoli said that the hospital inspection commission will arrive tomorrow and, if deemed appropriate, the colleague will be sanctioned. He also added that the colleague told him that a friend on a scooter had reached him at the hospital, who gave him the bust of Mussolini.
The colleague then temporarily placed the object in a room, waiting to take it home by car at the end of his shift. While not justifying the incident, Antropoli stressed that the bust was not displayed inside the Cardarelli Hospital, but was kept temporarily while waiting to be transported home.
