Mourning in the music world: American singer Eric Carmen, performer of the hits “Hungry Eyes” (in the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing) and “All by Myself” (later performed by Celine Dion), has died at the age of 74.
His wife Amy announced the news, but did not specify where the death occurred or the cause.
In a message posted on the artist's website, his wife wrote: "Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep this weekend. He was so happy knowing that for decades his music has touched so many people and he will always be remembered by them."
Amy Carmen also asked fans to “respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our tremendous loss.”
Born in 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio, Eric Carmen began his musical career by co-founding the rock band The Raspberries in the 70s, a five-year experience. The band reunited in 2004 for a tour, which resulted in the album “Raspberries Pop Art Live” released in 2017.
Carmen is best known for “All by Myself” and “Hungry Eyes,” but also for “Almost Paradise,” which he co-wrote for the film Footloose and which earned him a Grammy nomination. His hits have been covered by artists as diverse as Celine Dion, Shaun Cassidy (That’s Rock ‘n Roll), and John Travolta (Never Gonna Fall in Love Again).
The passing of Eric Carmen leaves an unfillable void in the world of music. His songs will continue to thrill and make generations of fans dream.
