The Carabinieri of the Montecatini Terme Company, in the province of Pistoia, have dismantled a group of Neapolitan scammers specializing in scams against the elderly.
It all started in October 2023, when a woman from Pescia, over seventy years old, was tricked by a fake lawyer who told her that her son had been arrested and needed money to avoid detention. The woman handed over 10.000 euros to an accomplice of the scammer, who showed up at her home pretending to be an associate of the lawyer.
The Carabinieri of Pescia, thanks to video surveillance images, telephone records and testimonies, have identified the three scammers: two Neapolitans living in Napoli and one resident in the province of Florence.
The three were charged with aggravated fraud in competition and, for one of them, also with theft in a house. The GIP of the Court of Pistoia issued three precautionary custody orders.
House arrest with electronic bracelet for the scammer who entered the victim's home. Obligation to reside in the municipality of residence with a ban on going out at night and obligation to report to the Judicial Police for the other two accomplices.
The indications of the carabinieri
Elderly scams are a heinous crime that exploits the vulnerability of the weakest people.
It is important to raise awareness among seniors about these types of scams and provide them with advice on how to protect themselves.
The police are committed to combating this phenomenon, but the collaboration of citizens to report any suspicious cases is also essential.
