The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office (District Anti-Mafia Directorate) has requested 17 convictions for politicians and businessmen from Melito di Napoli arrested in April 2023 for serious crimes, including mafia-style vote-trading, attacks on citizens' political rights, mafia-type association, corruption, external competition in mafia association and attempted extortion.
The trial is being held using the abbreviated procedure. The deputy prosecutor Giuliano Caputo asked in particular:
10 years in prison for former mayor Luciano Mottola (39 years old), elected in 2021 at the head of a center-right coalition.
12 years for former City Council President Rocco Marrone.
12 years and four months for the 26-year-old former FdI councilor Antonio Cuozzo.
13 years for the entrepreneur Emilio Rostan.
9 years and four months for Vincenzo Marrone.
8 years and two months for Marco Ascione.
20 years and eight months in prison for 39-year-old Luigi Tutino.
11 years and six months for Luciano De Luca.
Tutino and De Luca are believed to be members of the Amato-Pagano clan.
The defense is entrusted to a team of lawyers, including Mario Griffo, Umberto Del Basso De Caro, Luigi Senese and Gandolfo Geraci. The sentence is expected in the coming weeks.
The requests for conviction formulated by the Naples Prosecutor's Office are a hard blow against the organized crime and corruption that afflict the territory of Melito di Napoli.
