Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has landed at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport as investigations into alleged irregular contracts during his tenure continue. Rubiales returned to Spain from the Dominican Republic a few days earlier than planned.
He was seen leaving the Spanish capital's airport in a Guardia Civil van, laSexta reported. Speculation in the Spanish media that Rubiales might be arrested upon his arrival in Spain has not been confirmed. Legal sources told laSexta that no arrest warrant has been issued for him, but the Guardia Civil may decide to hold him until he testifies in court.
In an interview given to laSexta in the Dominican Republic, which airs tonight, Rubiales categorically denied having received bribes during his term as president of the Spanish Football Federation. “The funds in my bank accounts are the fruit of my work and my savings”, he underlined, “I am not involved in any baseball-related activities nor do I own property for the construction of hotels in Saudi Arabia.”
Rubiales returned to Madrid after agents from the Guardia Civil's Central Operations Unit raided his accommodation in the Dominican Republic on Monday. Investigators are looking into alleged irregularities in contracts for the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
