The free beach of Palazzo Donn'Anna in Naples has transformed into a veritable banquet for seagulls after a crowded Sunday. As highlighted by MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli of the Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra, the remains of picnics left by bathers have transformed the beach into an open-air landfill.
Yesterday, beachgoers, both locals and tourists, left numerous wastes on the sand: plastic bottles, glasses, snack packages, papers and other types of waste. Even plant pots were used as unlikely bins. To counter this situation, the councilor of Europa Verde of Municipality I, Lorenzo Pascucci, organized a cleanup day with the help of activists from Sole che Ride and citizen volunteers.
Armed with nets and driven by a strong civic sense, they worked to restore the cleanliness of the beach. “The easy access to this beach has made the area particularly vulnerable to abuse,” commented Pascucci. “The lack of adequate waste containers and a poor beach cleaning service in recent days have aggravated the situation, but this does not justify the attitude of contempt shown towards our city. It is unacceptable that tourists have also adopted these uncivilized behaviors.”
Pascucci and Borrelli stressed the need for a radical change in the attitude of citizens and visitors. “Despite our constant requests for more bins and more frequent maintenance, real change must begin with the respect that each of us owes to our own city,” they declared. “The fight for decency on our beaches is long, but we will continue to fight so that care and respect become the norm.”
