Lega Serie A has today announced the criteria that will guide the composition of the calendar for the 2024/25 season, introducing some significant changes to ensure a balanced tournament that is suited to the needs of teams and spectators. One of the main points of the new calendar is the absolute alternation of home and away matches for some of the most heated rivalries in Italian football.
The pairs of teams involved are Inter-Milan, Lazio-Roma, Juventus-Torino and Empoli-Fiorentina. This decision aims to ensure fair and balanced treatment for both teams involved in each derby. Also for the 2024/25 season, the Serie A will adopt an asymmetric calendar.
This means that the sequence of matches in the first half of the season will be different from that in the second half of the season, with at least 8 days between the two matches against the same opponent. The aim is to best manage the concomitances linked to reasons of public order, European competitions, local events and the specific needs of the clubs, aiming to maximize attendance in the stadiums and the television audience.
Big city derbies will no longer be scheduled for matchdays 1 and 38, nor in the midweek round (matchday 10), to keep the attention of the public high throughout the championship. In addition, teams participating in the UEFA Champions League will not clash with those involved in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League on specific dates, in order to avoid overlaps with the “back to back” rounds of the European competitions.
The 2024/25 Championship will only feature one midweek round, scheduled for matchday 10, to reduce the load of matches during the regular season. There will be no winter break, with the tournament only interrupted for the four FIFA windows (September 8, October 13, November 17, March 23). During the Christmas period, matches will take place on the weekends of December 22, December 29 and January 5, ensuring continuity to the championship during the holidays.
