Naples – A dark chapter in the history of Scampia closes with the start of the demolition of the Yellow Sail, a building that is a symbol of degradation and marginality, sadly known also for its presence in the television series “Gomorra”. The works, which began today, should be completed within 40 days, marking a crucial step in the urban redevelopment project “Re Start Scampia”.

A new beginning for Scampia

At the same time as the demolition, work began on the construction of 433 new homes, which should be completed by the end of 2027. The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, stressed the importance of this moment, stating that “it is a sign that the State is there, that when it wants to solve a problem it can do so and I believe that democracy is defended by giving equal dignity to everyone”.

A touching farewell and an indelible memory

The Vele Committee greeted the Vela Gialla with a banner that read “Ciao Bella, Ciao,” a touching tribute to a building that, despite everything, has been home to many. On the walls of the Vela, numerous writings bear witness to the stories of those who lived there.

The future of Scampia: memory, services and rebirth

After the Yellow Sail, it will be the turn of the Red Sail. The Light Blue Sail, instead, will be preserved and transformed into a museum that will tell the story of the Sails. In memory of the victims of the collapse of the gallery that occurred last July, a work of art will be created by a famous sculptor.

An ambitious redevelopment project

The “Re Start Scampia” project, funded with 159 million euros, includes not only the demolition of the Vele, but also the creation of green spaces, community services and a new school complex. The goal is to transform Scampia into a liveable and dignified neighborhood, erasing the image of degradation and marginalization that has characterized it for too long.

The precautionary order that led to 15 arrests last week in Scampia and the northern area of Naples, targeting the Raia clan of Chalet Bakù, is much more than a judicial measure. It's a stark snapshot of the Camorra's resistance, anchored to archaic codes, an obsession with respect, and violence as a response to every insult...

The demolition of the Vela Gialla is an important step for Scampia. We hope that the work on the new housing will go as planned. Redevelopment can bring benefits but it takes time and patience.

Yes, but let's not forget that there have been many promises in the past that have not been kept. It is essential that this time the project is followed through to the end without delays or problems.
