The storm raging on the island of Ischia has exposed an old plague: the danger of many trees, especially near public facilities. The latest episode, the collapse of a large tree in front of the Rizzoli hospital in Lacco Ameno, is yet another demonstration of how the lack of periodic checks can put citizens' safety at risk.
Despite repeated reports and requests for static checks, the island's tree heritage has been neglected for years. The risk of serious accidents is always lurking, as demonstrated by numerous past episodes.
It's time to act. We need an urgent plan to monitor the health of all trees, with particular attention to those located in high-risk areas, such as hospitals, schools and busy roads. Only in this way can we avoid new tragedies and ensure everyone's safety.
A few years ago, in addition to having to raise its voice to have a gigantic dry pine tree removed which represented a danger for those who frequented the hospital and despite this no one bothered to cut it down, the PCIM-L founded by the late Domenico Savio forcefully requested a periodic assessment of all the large trees present in the vicinity of theHospital.
As usual, this request has evidently gone unheard. Now is the time to say enough to the dangers for the island's citizens and tourists. Let's monitor all the tree heritage of the Island of Ischia to avoid a serious accident sooner or later.
