Caserta – Yesterday evening, a 35-year-old from Caserta, subjected to the alternative measure of probation to social services and with a previous drug conviction, was caught red-handed by the Carabinieri.
The man was caught by the military of the Operational and Radiomobile Nucleus of the Caserta Company while he was trying to tamper with the GPS tracking system of an electric scooter, parked on a public road a short distance from his home.
The 35-year-old, so focused on his criminal intent, did not notice the arrival of the police, who intervened promptly, blocking him before he could deactivate the vehicle's security system. Without the intervention of the military, a few moments would have been enough to complete the operation and start the scooter.
Despite the failed attempt, the damage caused to the sophisticated electric vehicle, owned by one of the mobile sharing companies operating in the area, was quantified at around 500 euros, due to tampering with the electronic parts. The scooter was promptly recovered and returned to the company's mobility service manager, who proceeded to formalize the complaint.
The 35-year-old was then taken to the police station and reported at large for attempted theft. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges that authorities face in ensuring the safety of public property.
