A 64-year-old woman, Patrizia De Rosa, died on December 26 in Giugliano in Campania, after a long ordeal that began with a stomach reduction operation at the CTO in Naples. The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, following a complaint from family members assisted by Studio3A, opened a case for manslaughter, ordering an autopsy on the body.
The operation, a “sleeve gastrectomy”, was performed last October to solve an obesity problem. However, a complication occurred: a stomach fistula. Despite the initial interventions and reassurances of the doctors, the woman's conditions progressively worsened. Transferred to the Monaldi, an endoprosthesis was applied, but the fistula did not close.
The family claims that the woman continued to suffer and get worse, despite numerous medical visits and tests. On the night between Christmas and Boxing Day, they found her lifeless in bed.
The autopsy, performed on January 10, should clarify the causes of death and establish whether there is any medical responsibility. The technical consultants appointed by the Prosecutor's Office will have to ascertain whether the death is linked to post-operative complications and whether the health workers adopted all necessary measures to assist the patient.
