Rome, January 8, 2025 – The Italian government is preparing to legally challenge the Campania regional law that allows Governor Vincenzo De Luca to apply for a third termThe decision, expected tomorrow, was taken at Premier League level Giorgia Meloni, marking a significant move within the national political establishment.
During the preparatory meeting for the Council of Ministers, called for tomorrow at 18:XNUMX p.m., Calderoli left open the possibility of not proceeding with the appeal, perhaps to avoid internal tensions within his party. Although the League does not formally oppose the third mandate - given that governor Luca Zaia intends to run again in Veneto - the local leaders of the League in Campania are pushing to support the De Luca law. However, at the national level, the League maintains a more cautious and so far silent position on the issue.
On the contrary, Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia are firmly against the extension of De Luca's mandate, claiming that this decision is not influenced by the upcoming regional elections. The national League, however, seems to be more cautious, preferring to avoid public statements on the matter.
Galeazzo Bignami, leader of the Melonian group in the Chamber, defined the question of the third mandate as a question of "generational change“, hoping for a common path with the center-left. Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democrats, also declared herself against De Luca's re-candidacy, criticizing the governor of Campania.
Tensions within the center-right are escalating, with Governor Zaia threatening to lead an independent race in Veneto if there are any impositions from above on the choice of a successor. Meanwhile, Fratelli d'Italia, which in Campania has about 30% of the vote, is urging the party to nominate the next governor, with Senator Luca De Carlo in pole position for the post.
Forza Italia, led by secretary Antonio Tajani, supports the opposition for the third term and hopes that the center-right can designate a unified candidate for Campania. Fulvio Martusciello, regional coordinator of FI in Campania, said: «De Luca will be able to vote for the third, fourth and fifth mandate, but in October we will win. In the meantime, it is better to avoid his re-candidacy».
The press release from the Council of Ministers of January 9 provides not only for the challenge of the Campania law, but also for the appointment of Fabrizio Curcio, former head of Civil Protection, as commissioner for post-flood management in Emilia Romagna.
The government’s decision to intervene in regional legislation reflects the complex internal dynamics of the Italian center-right and the tensions between the various political factions in view of the upcoming elections.

It is strange that the government wants to challenge the Campania law, perhaps there are reasons that we do not understand well. In any case, it seems that the situation is very complicated and there are many different opinions among the political parties.
