“It is not an act of no confidence, let's give the citizens back their say”
Giugliano – Nineteen city councilors of Giugliano have resigned, causing the early end of the administration led by Mayor Nicola Pirozzi. A decision that, according to rumors, would have been urged by the mayor himself, intending to run again in the next elections with a broad center-left coalition, involving representatives of civil society.
Pirozzi, elected four years ago, had suspended himself from the Democratic Party last November, after being implicated in an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office of North Naples into the management of the waste contract. The prosecutor had requested house arrest, but the measure was rejected by the judge for preliminary investigations after questioning.
The municipal administration is also burdened by three other judicial investigations, relating to a sports centre, reimbursements for electoral commissions and alleged irregularities involving members of the council in office until 2019.
The resignations of the councilors, as stated in an official note, represent a gesture of "responsibility and support" aimed at giving citizens the opportunity to express themselves at the polls, without being an act of no confidence in the mayor. The resigning councilors themselves have in fact reaffirmed their trust in Pirozzi, recognizing his "seriousness, commitment and administrative capacity".
The choice has sparked debate among the council groups, while Pirozzi has announced a press conference in the afternoon to clarify his position and next steps.
