New episode of violence in the prison of Poggioreale, Napoli, where an agent of the Penitentiary Police he was brutally attacked by a foreign prisoner: the one who reported it was the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (Sappe), who defines the incident as "yet another serious attack against service personnel".
According to initial reconstructions, the prisoner suddenly attacked the agent, causing him injuries that required hospitalisation in theCardarelli hospital. Fortunately, the policeman is not in danger of life, but the episode brings back to the fore the problem of safety in penitentiary institutions.
Il leader Know of Campania, Raffaele Serra, expressed solidarity with his injured colleague, stressing the need for urgent interventions to protect the Penitentiary Police personnel. On the same line Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of the union, who denounces an increasingly unsustainable situation: “We can no longer tolerate this escalation of violence. We need concrete and immediate measures from the institutions”.
In fact, the Neapolitan prison has long been at the centre of critical issues related to staff shortages – approximately 200 fewer agents than the necessary staff – and at a rate of overcrowding exceeding 100%. Despite the difficulties, the staff continues to ensure the safety of the facility with professionalism and dedication. However, episodes like this highlight the urgency of concrete measures to improve working conditions within Italian prisons.
