IThe British newspaper The Times yesterday published a correction regarding the statements of conductor Edward Gardner about the choir of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
In a January 14, 2025, article, Gardner had referred to the choir members as “mobsters.” The director later recanted his statements and apologized for the comments, expressing regret for the offense caused.
Lawyers Angelo and Sergio Pisani, representing the choir members, have taken legal action against Gardner and The Times. Despite the published apology, the lawyers stressed that the damage suffered by the artists is incalculable and announced their intention to pursue a claim for defamation, believing that the matter cannot be considered closed with the apology alone.
On February 24th, The Times removed the offending article from its website. Earlier, on February 18, Gardner publicly expressed his displeasure, explaining that his comments were based on a misunderstanding regarding a fight between two choir artists. He also stated that he had great respect for the Teatro San Carlo choir and retracted his previous statements.

Reading this news, it seems strange to me that a conductor can make such serious statements without thinking carefully first. It is important that the words chosen are always appropriate, especially in the artistic and cultural fields.
