The Pietà de' Turchini Foundation is preparing to amaze the public with an unmissable event: the performance of Domenico Sarro's “Missa di Requiem”, scheduled for Saturday 12 April at 19:00 pm, at the Church of Santa Caterina da Siena in Naples.
Article Key Points
This extraordinary performance is part of the 2024/25 musical season “Tengo Genio” and is a co-production with the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. In addition, a recording will be made for Turchini Records, in collaboration with the Banco di Napoli Foundation and the Rotary Club Napoli.
An “unheard of” work
The “Missa di Requiem” is a forgotten masterpiece, whose first performance took place during the opening of last season. For the “Specchi di musica” review, a prestigious preview will come to life on April 11 at 17:30 pm in the Palatine Chapel of the Royal Palace of Caserta. The performance of the composition by the legendary Neapolitan composer of the early eighteenth century will be entrusted to Talenti Vulcanici, directed by Stefano Demicheli, and will also see the participation of La Stagione Armonica, accompanied by the Schola Gregoriana della Pietà de' Turchini, under the direction of Lanfranco Menga.
A musical treasure to be rediscovered
Musicological research conducted by Paologiovanni Maione has brought to light the “Missa di Requiem”, a writing of rare finesse that reflects the musical sentiment of the time with deeply emotional passages. The composer Domenico Sarro, born in Trani in 1679 and moved to Naples, is known for his prolific production of sacred music, although often overlooked in the history of music. The main manuscript of his work is kept at the Austrian National Library in Vienna, while other copies are in Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany.
Talents that shine
I Talenti Vulcanici, the ensemble formed in 2011 with the aim of promoting young musicians, has already made headlines in the Foundation's last season with the performance of the unreleased piece “Partenope l'Eterna”. The Armonica Season, active since 1991, boasts a repertoire that ranges from the Renaissance to the contemporary, under the direction of Stefano Demicheli. The importance of valorizing works by little-known composers such as Sarro is evident: his “Missa di Requiem” remains a gem to be rediscovered in the current musical panorama.
