NAPLES – Another breakdown, another night of inconvenience for users of the funicular of Chiaia, in Naples: after 28 months of closure e 9 million euros of public funds invested for the twentieth-year overhaul, the plant – reopened last 31st January – continue to record sudden stops and malfunctions.
The latest episode occurred late yesterday evening, when the race of 23:30 has been suspended: the travellers, already boarding the carriages, have been let yourself go down e the entrances have been closed to prevent further access. According to the local page of the Republic,ANM he attributed the block to a electrical fault, solved after about half an hour. But the cup now seems full for the approximately 15 thousand daily users of the line, which connects the districts Vomero e Chiaia, with intermediate stops at Palazzolo and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
The spokesperson of the discontent is Gennaro New Year, Chairman of the Hillside Values Committee and former president of the Vomero district, who has been closely following the events of the plant for years. Capodanno also founded the group on Facebook “Naples: the orphans of the funicular of Chiaia“, which counts more than 1.500 members.
“The situation is unacceptable – he says –. After more than two years of work stoppage, we find ourselves with a system that continues to break down, with race cancellations, sudden interruptions and in some cases, passengers forced to walk down emergency stairs along the tunnel to reach the nearest station”.
New Year's Eve calls for urgent intervention: “It is needed the intervention of the judiciary, both ordinary and accounting. We want to understand how the 9 million euro public and why, despite this investment, the system does not guarantee the continuity and safety of the service. Citizens deserve answers and transparency”.

The situation of the Chiaia funicular is very worrying. After all this money spent, it is unacceptable that it continues to have breakdowns. Commuters deserve a better and more reliable service, let's hope the problems are solved.
