NAPLES – From the pitch to commerce, passing through the heart of the city. Scott McTominay, the Scottish midfielder who set Naples alight with performances as a leader and 12 goals, is ready to become a brand too. SSC Napoli has filed a request with the Italian Patent and Trademark Office to register the trademark “McFratm”, a nickname affectionately given to him by fans and which has already become a cult.
The origin of the nickname is entirely Neapolitan: it comes from the crasis between the surname McTominay and the word “fratemo” – my brother, in dialect – that teammate Pasquale Mazzocchi often uses in the locker room. McTominay himself said he appreciates the nickname, which already stands out on shirts and magnets that have appeared around the city after Napoli's tricolor ride.
After having elected him MVP of the season, De Laurentiis' club has wasted no time and now aims to capitalize on the enormous success of its "Braveheart azzurro". The application for registration of the trademark "McFratm" covers nine product categories: from mugs to notebooks, from backpacks to swimsuits, through food products, toys and sporting goods.
McTominay, who arrived from Manchester United with the desire to relaunch himself, took over Naples with the strength of his insertions and a rare continuity. Now his number 8 shirt could end up not only in the stadiums, but also on the shelves. Because, apparently, McFratm is much more than just a nickname: he is a phenomenon.
