Stefano Addeo, the German teacher at the “Medi” institute in Cicciano who ended up at the center of the controversy, has been suspended as a precautionary measure with half salary.
In a post on Facebook, referring to the daughter of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, he wrote: “I hope she meets the same end as Martina“, the young woman from Afragola killed by her ex-boyfriend with stones. A chilling phrase that unleashed a wave of public indignation, leading to the opening of a disciplinary proceeding and a criminal investigation.
The suspension order, issued by the general director of the Campania Regional School Office, Ettore Acerra, was motivated by the need to "guarantee and protect the serenity of the school community", and will remain in force until the conclusion of the internal proceedings.
The suspension does not preclude further action, including a possible dismissal, already requested by several parties, including the leader of Italia Viva Matteo Renzi.
The 65-year-old teacher learned of the decision from his home, where he is after being discharged from the hospital in Nola. On Monday afternoon, in fact, Addeo had been hospitalized with a red code for a suicide attempt: he had ingested a mix of psychotropic drugs.
“I couldn't stand the media's fury,” he said from his hospital bed, explaining that he had made “a mistake” but did not deserve “public lynching.”
In a letter of apology addressed to Prime Minister Meloni and sent a few hours before the attempt to take his life, Addeo wrote: "I take full responsibility. It was an unfortunate, inadequate, unacceptable sentence, which does not represent me as a man or as an educator." An apology that did not calm the echo of the story, nor prevent the break with his own school community.
The director of the “Medi” institute, Anna Iossa, had in fact officially distanced herself from the post: “The entire institute dissociates itself from the professor's statements – she wrote in a note – and expresses its condemnation for contents that do not respond to the principles of respect, education in civil values and responsibility”.
Meanwhile, the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has also opened a file to evaluate possible criminal implications.
Dal canto suo, Giorgia Melonihe would have expressed willingness to meet, after receiving the teacher's letter of apology. But the school and judicial investigations remain open, and the teacher's professional future hangs on their outcome.
