CThe number of pedestrian casualties on Italian roads continues to grow. According to the latest data from the Sapidata Observatory-asaps (Association of Supporters and Friends of the Highway Police), 155 pedestrians have died since the beginning of 2025, seven in the last week alone.
The toll is dramatic: among the victims there are 102 men and 53 women, with a particularly alarming figure regarding the elderly. A total of 78 of the deceased were over 65 years old, representing exactly half of the total.
The monthly trend shows a tragic peak in January with 43 victims, followed by 31 in February, 32 in March, 19 in April and 22 in May. Eight more deaths were already recorded in the first days of June.
Compared to the same period in 2024, there has been a slight decrease: in the first five months of this year, there were 148 pedestrian deaths, compared to 169 last year, a decrease of 12%.
Lazio remains the hardest hit region, with 27 deaths, 18 of which occurred in Rome alone. Lombardy follows with 23 victims, Campania and Emilia-Romagna with 13 each, and Sicily with 11.
Asaps launches yet another appeal to the institutions: “Urgent interventions are needed to protect the safety of pedestrians, especially in urban areas – explains the association –. Respecting speed limits, increasing checks and road safety education are fundamental elements to stop this silent massacre”.

It is worrying to see how the number of pedestrian victims continues to grow, it is an issue that must be addressed seriously. Road safety is fundamental and the data shows the seriousness of the current situation.
I agree that pedestrian safety should be a priority, especially in cities where traffic is more intense. Let's hope that the authorities take this situation seriously to improve things.
I think we need more road safety education for everyone, not just drivers but also pedestrians. The statistics clearly show a problem we cannot ignore.
