Napoli – Strengthening controls in the most exposed areas of the Land of Fires, with a targeted and coordinated strategy among institutions. This is the objective outlined during the Interprovincial Committee for Public Order and Security, which met today at the Prefecture of Naples, chaired by the prefects of Naples and Caserta, Michele di Bari and Lucia Volpe.
The meeting focused on monitoring illegal activities related to waste dumping and burning, an environmental emergency affecting over 150 municipalities across the two provinces. "We have defined new guidelines to intensify controls, particularly in the border areas between Naples and Caserta, where the phenomena are most critical", explained the prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari.
"We're not at year zero," he added. "In the first six months of 2025, we've already conducted extraordinary investigations, which have resulted in fines of over €5 million, the seizure of around 200 companies, and the filing of reports of over 300 individuals."
The government remains vigilant, especially in light of the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which condemned Italy for failing to do enough to protect the health of citizens in polluted areas.
For this reason, Di Bari emphasized, "we have initiated ongoing discussions with civic committees and local organizations, which are helping us define a list of priority interventions."
Representatives of AGEA (Agency for Agricultural Payments) also attended the meeting, which is engaged in implementing measures to support enforcement and prevention efforts. The new checks will begin in the most exposed areas, based on an updated and continuously updated mapping. "I don't rule out," the prefect concluded, "the possibility of meeting again next week to review the first operational phase."
