It all began on Via Vigliena, a short walk from the port and the victims' home. Brothers Vincenzo and Ugo Ambrosio, 34 and 33 years old respectively, ran into an acquaintance with whom they apparently had a serious prior disagreement. Within minutes, the tension escalated.

At that point, the situation got out of hand: the Ambrosio brothers called their father, 59-year-old Salvatore, asking him to join them. Their rival did exactly the same.
