Aversa – Public Prosecutor Marianna Di Palo has requested a six-year prison sentence for Giuseppe Carione, a retired Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) marshal and former president of the Madonna di Casaluce Celebrations Committee. He is charged with stalking, extortion, and embezzlement against the parish priest and rector of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria ad Nives, who died about a year and a half ago while the trial was underway.
The closing argument was held before the Second Criminal Section of the Court of Naples North, in Aversa, presided over by Giacinta Santaniello. After the prosecutor, attorney Raffaele Gaetano Crisileo spoke for the civil plaintiff. Both, in speeches lasting over two hours, reconstructed the events alleged against Carione.
According to the prosecution's theory, the priest was the victim of extortion and harassment, not only through threats but also through defamatory posters posted throughout Casaluce, which caused dismay among the residents. All of this forced the priest to change his lifestyle, moving in with his sister in San Marcellino and seeking medical specialists and psychologists. The latter, testifying in the trial, confirmed the priest's state of anxiety and depression during that period.
The plaintiff documented the circumstances not only with witness statements, but also with documents. Carione, in fact, allegedly sent signed complaints and reports to the Prefect, the Police Commissioner, the Mayor of Casaluce, the Superintendence of Fine Arts, the Carabinieri of Teverola, and the Bishop of Aversa. All the complaints against the priest were also forwarded to the Public Prosecutor's Office of North Naples, resulting in criminal proceedings against him, all of which were promptly dismissed.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 11th, when Giuseppe Carione's defense, represented by attorney Alfonso Quarto, will argue. Carione remains a defendant, and his position will be assessed by the court following the trial.
