“We are conducting a study that highlights a large and particularly relevant phenomenon, which is the incidence of new recruits. We are witnessing a significant generational change in the mafia, both in Sicily and in Campania and in Calabria. The service operations say so, and so do some signals that we find from the events that occur on the territory”. The announcement was made by the director of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate, Carabinieri General Giuseppe Governale, on the sidelines of a meeting with the Provincial Student Commission of Salerno. For the head of the DIA, “the presence of the State is certainly necessary, at least desirable”, but “the action of the State cannot correspond exclusively to the action of the police forces and the judiciary”. And this is because, he explains, “the State is a complex organisation that has numerous elements that must be deployed, in a systemic manner, on the territory to obtain the results we want. Mafia criminal organisations are not criminal organisations tout court, simple, otherwise we would have defeated them. Instead, they feed on the territory. They have a sentiment that is also appreciated by micro-cultures that generate, grow in society, especially in the South”. As for the expansion of criminal organizations, such as the Camorra, the Mafia and the 'Ndrangheta, Governale adds that “their presence continues to exist and is particularly relevant”. And, recalling Leonardo Sciascia's 1961 novel, 'The Day of the Owl', in which the author “spoke of a line, the palm line, or the Mafia, corruption; he said that every year it rises five hundred meters and is beyond Rome”, Governale underlines how the Mafias are “criminal organizations that expand, we also find them particularly penetrating in the territory beyond the Alps, where the sensitivities on the phenomenon are unfortunately what they are and therefore they manage to infiltrate”.
