Naples. "Why such a harsh sentence?" This was the question posed to the judges of the Naples Court of Appeal by Toni Essobti Badre, sentenced to life imprisonment on November 9, 2020, for the murder of 7-year-old Giuseppe Dorice and the attempted murder of his younger sister—both children of his partner—in Cardito.

A long letter sent to the judge of the Court of Appeal, on the eve of the beginning of the second trial, in which the defendant is surprised at having received such a harsh sentence.

The children's mother, Valentina Casa, was sentenced to six years in prison in the first instance because she was found guilty only of omission. "Mr. Judge, I apologize for wasting your time but I would like you to help me understand why I received such harsh treatment. I have always admitted my responsibilities," the man wrote. The appeal presented by the Prosecutor's Office against the acquittal of Valentina Casa on the charges of murder and attempted murder is at the center of the second instance trial that begins tomorrow morning before the judges of the second section of the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Naples. "I know that my apologies will serve no purpose, except to find a little peace," the defendant continues, "I don't know what went off in my brain, I didn't want to kill but everything went dark." The child was killed at home because he had broken the back of his new crib, but, thanks to the testimony of his injured 12-year-old sister, the prosecutors have reconstructed a scenario of daily violence.

“The Associations Cam Telefono Azzurro and Akira Ovd that I represent, alongside the meticulous and scrupulous work of the Prosecutor's Office, have tried and are still trying, today, to give substance to the request for justice for little Giuseppe and his little sisters”. Thus in a press release the two associations Cam Telefono Azzurro and Akira Ovd, represented by the lawyer Clara Niola, comment on the start tomorrow in Naples of the second degree trial for the murder of little Giuseppe Dorice. “We are therefore confident – continues the note from the two associations – of finding in the criminal trial and in its legal rules the answer of and to justice, against a subject (the mother, ed.) who, in re ipsa, boasted that position of guarantee and protection that she has always failed to activate through her silences and omissions”.
