The city of Napoli has applied to be the European Capital of Sport 2026. The announcement was made today during the presentation of a protocol between the Municipality of Naples and Coni Campania. The decision on the assignment will be made by Aces (Association of European Capitals of Sport) presumably in 2024.
"Naples European capital of sport 2026 will be the point of arrival and relaunch - said the sports councilor, Emanuela Ferrante - but to get there it is necessary to deploy all possible energies and this memorandum of understanding is the first step. I am in constant contact with the Coni and now we will also make a step with the Region because we want Naples to return, after too many years, to the center of Italian sports politics and this event would be a good start and we will work in this direction ".
The application process has already been started and the Promotion Committee has been organized, whose key points are the Coni, the regional Ussi and the national Ussi. "We will exploit the sports facilities heritage redeveloped with the Universiade - explained Sergio Roncelli, president of Coni Campania - of which we will try to guarantee the maintenance and already in the first meetings of the Committee we will establish events to lead up to this great event which constitutes an important opportunity for Naples to show not only its beauty but also its organizational capacity".
