In Campania the Regional Council has approved the allocation of 15 million euros for the activation of the “Single European Emergency Number” – according to the model of the single response center, thanks to which, by calling the number 112, it will be possible to request the intervention of the Police Forces, the Fire Brigade, health facilities and assistance at sea.
The Single Emergency Number 1-1-2 (SAN 1-1-2) is the telephone number to call the emergency services in all the Member States of the European Union. The decision to establish a single emergency number for the whole European Union dates back to 1991 (Council Decision – 91/396/EEC) and is now implemented in almost all Member States.
The reasons for the establishment of the NUE 1-1-2 are linked to aspects of simplicity in memorizing the emergency number, the free nature of the service but, above all, to the standardization of technological solutions that allow all emergency services to be equipped with the function of geographic location of the caller, the management of automatic calling systems from moving vehicles, multilingual services and the exchange of calls in an integrated manner between the emergency services which in Italy are identified by: 113 (State Police), 112 (Carabinieri), 115 (Fire Brigade) and 118 (Health Emergency).
The number 1-1-2 is recognized not only by the fixed telephone network, but also by all GSM networks and can be called even from phones without a SIM card. In 2004, the European Union decided that, by 2008, the NUE 1-1-2 should have been extended to all member countries of the Union.
Many Member States have complied with the regulation immediately. In order to raise awareness of NUE 1-1-2, in 2009 the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union signed a resolution establishing 11 February as “European 1-1-2 Day”.
In Italy, the model of the Single Secular Response Center for the management of the NUE 1-1-2 Service is the model adopted by all the regions that have activated the service.
“The single emergency number will save time and money and provide a more efficient service to citizens, which is why we have been asking for its activation for almost a year. With the single European emergency number, you can reach the police, rescue services, and firefighters by phone, free of charge, wherever you are in Europe. It was already active in several European countries and in some Italian regions, so it was imperative that Campania also adapt.
We ask for greater efficiency from emergency numbers, increasingly often they do not answer citizens. With the single number we expect greater efficiency in responding quickly to emergency calls from the population.” - the comment of the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli.
