The artistic director Carmine Pagano
The artistic director Carmine Pagano talks about the event: “Our first theatre review is starting, or rather, the Piccolo Teatro is finally starting. – explains Pagano – Franz Muller's death first and the pandemic later, have never really allowed for a real organization and programming of artistic events. Yes, in the meantime, various initiatives have been carried out, even of a certain level, such as some book presentations, including that of the writer Maurizio De Giovanni and others, and several theatrical performances, but until now it had not been possible to create a real calendar of events. Now we are here. We first wanted to create a program of shows that was as close as possible to the expectations of the public: it is the individual spectator who is the recipient of our choices, it is not our personal taste that must be satisfied but the individual citizen who pays and has his rights.
This concept should always be the basis of the work of every good artistic director. In this first edition, much space has been given to comedy, but we have also dedicated some time to reflect on important social issues. Always to stay as close as possible to the needs of the public, we have considered it appropriate to adopt a particular subscription system: ten shows chosen by the spectators. Each subscriber will be able to choose, based on his preferences, which shows to attend from a list of twenty companies.
The price of the subscription is 75 euros and when the subscriber decides to attend a show that he has not included in the ten planned, he will be entitled to a discount on the entrance price. For non-subscribers the price will be 10 euros, always, even on evenings dedicated to guests of a certainly higher level.
Theater must be as much as possible "for everyone", accessible to all, without distinctions of social class. It would make no sense to make culture only for those who already have culture or can afford it because they are advantaged by their economic conditions. I have often heard politicians repeat phrases like "Culture must unite, it cannot divide" .... Chatter! Culture will never be able to unite as long as the price of a ticket to go to the theater is inaccessible to many. In that case, culture divides and will continue to divide without a careful management of public money.
Speaking of public money, it is fair to point out that the Piccolo Teatro, at the time of writing, has not benefited from any contribution from public bodies; on the contrary, many private citizens and merchants have spontaneously wanted to support our project, alleviating our suffering a little. Our thanks go to them and to those who, by paying an entrance fee, will allow our activity to continue”.
