Over 10 thousand patients followed and more than 500 first visits every year, these are important numbers released by the Pain Therapy Unit of the Hospital Monaldi, led by Dr. Alfonso Papa, in view of the 22nd National Day of Relief which will be celebrated on May 28th and which sees the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli di Napoli as the absolute protagonist in treatments for the treatment of pain with innovative techniques.
The Pain Therapy Unit of Monaldi, in fact, is a reference hub for the whole of Campania and offers treatments that can ensure adequate relief to patients, identifying the best protocols both for the management of chronic pathologies and for alleviating the suffering of those undergoing oncological therapies.
Also important is the surgical activity for interventional procedures (2.500 operations per year, of which 300 are highly complex) such as, for example, the implantation of spinal cord stimulators, electronic intrathecal infusion systems or the use of radiofrequency neuromodulation.
Highly specialized procedures that are used to improve the quality of life of those affected by chronic and particularly complex to treat pain syndromes that often reduce the quality of life of those who suffer from them.
The implantation of the spinal neurostimulator, in particular, is a highly complex surgical procedure that involves the positioning of an electrode between the cervical or spinal vertebrae which, by releasing electrical impulses, decreases or eliminates the perception of pain.
The Monaldi Pain Therapy Center, in 2022, was the first in Italy for this particular procedure (about 150 devices implanted). Even more specialized is dorsal root ganglion neurostimulation (DRGSCS). A surgical technique for which Monaldi, since 2012, has been an Italian reference center and a national and international training center.
“Pain is a condition that has a dramatic impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. Pain therapy, therefore, is an essential component of medical practice. The Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli is committed every day to ensuring that each patient receives the best possible care using cutting-edge approaches and increasingly personalized medicine,” commented Anna Iervolino, general manager of the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli.
